How to celebrate Ganesh Chaturthi to remove obstacles from your life?

Ganesh Chaturthi, the festival celebrating the birth of Lord Ganesha, is a time for devotion, rituals, and invoking prosperity. This ancient remedy guide for Ganesh Chaturthi outlines the step-by-step process to welcome Lord Ganesha into your home and seek his blessings to remove obstacles and usher in auspiciousness.

How to perform Ganesh Chaturthi to remove obstacles from your life?

Ganesh Chaturthi is a joyous festival honouring Lord Ganesha, the remover of obstacles. Here is an ancient remedy that you can perform on this auspicious day to remove all obstacles.

How to prepare for this ancient remedy?

  • Wake up early in the morning, take a bath, and wear yellow clothes, which symbolize purity and auspiciousness.

  • Clean the floor or altar where you wish to place Lord Ganesha with Gangajal (holy water from the Ganges) or plain water. The placement should be in the North, Northeast, or East direction of your house.

  • Play or chant any Ganapati mantra of your choice, such as "Ganapati Atharvashirsha," on your phone or through YouTube throughout the ritual to maintain a sacred atmosphere.

How to set up the altar?
  1. Place an Asan (mat) and sit facing the Northeast, North, or East direction.

  2. Light dhoop (incense) or agarbatti (incense sticks) and place them on the floor in front of you.

  3. Draw a Swastik on the floor or altar where you wish to place Ganesha using a mixture of kumkum (vermillion) with a little Gangajal, fresh gomutra (cow urine), or plain water. Place a few grains of rice on the Swastik for purity.

  4. Fill a silver or brass plate with rice and place it on top of the Swastik. Draw another Swastik with kumkum paste on a betel leaf and place it in the center of the rice. The pointed end of the leaf should face you, while the stem should face the opposite direction.

  5. Light two ghee lamps (diyas) on either side of the rice plate to invite divine energy into your home.

How to create the Ganesha Idol?
  • Make a ball or cone shape by mixing turmeric powder with Gangajal, gomutra, or plain water, adding the liquid gradually. You may also include cow dung or sandalwood powder if available for added sanctity.

  • Shape the mixture into a Ganesha idol (you can find tutorials on YouTube) or keep it as a simple round or conical ball.

  • Once you have the desired shape, hold the idol close to your heart, close your eyes, and humbly request Lord Ganesha to enter your home and reside in the idol.

  • Chant "Om Gam Ganapataye Namah" once and place the Ganesha idol on top of the betel leaf.

Welcoming Lord Ganesha
  1. Dip a few strands of durva (sacred grass) in Gangajal, rosewater, or plain water and sprinkle them over the Ganesha idol to welcome him into your home.

  2. Apply kumkum on the Ganesha idol and sprinkle a few grains of rice as a mark of respect.

  3. Offer a cloth (vastra) or a simple strand of cotton to the deity.

  4. Place a red flower at Ganesha’s feet and 11 strands of durva on top of the idol.

  5. Light another ghee lamp (diya) in front of the idol, along with more incense sticks.

  6. Offer fruits, naivedya (sweets such as laddoo, kheer, halva, chakli, dry fruits), and perform a small aarti (ritual of worship with a lamp).

Chantings and Offerings:
  • You can offer 108 blades of durva while chanting "Om Gam Ganapataye Namaha" 108 times. Alternatively, chant the Atharvasheersha or play it on a device. This practice can also be performed in the evening at sunset.

  • Welcome Lord Ganesha and pray for the removal of obstacles and the ushering in of auspiciousness in your life.

Next Morning Rituals:
  • Perform a small aarti again in the morning and offer fresh flowers, fruits, and sweets.

Ganesh Visarjan (Immersion Ceremony)
  1. Post 4 p.m., before sunset, sprinkle some water on the Ganesha idol using a few strands of durva.

  2. Carefully pull the betel leaf on which the idol is placed toward you. Pick up the idol with both hands and take it around the house, starting from the kitchen and moving through every room and tijori (safe/treasure chest).

  3. After completing the round, ask all family members to sprinkle rice or flowers on the idol and express gratitude to Lord Ganesha for his presence in the home.

  4. Fill a small vessel with clean water outside the house or on your balcony. Dip the idol three times into this water, immersing it completely on the third dip.

  5. Once the idol has melted into the water, drink a little as prasadam (sacred offering), sprinkle the water at the entrance of your home, around the house, on family members, and in the cash box. You can even use this water for bathing or to create another small turmeric and sandalwood ball to keep in the cash box for prosperity.

By following these ancient remedies for Ganesh Chaturthi, you align yourself with traditional practices that have been passed down for generations, inviting the divine presence of Lord Ganesha into your home to bless you with prosperity, peace, and happiness.

Wishing you a blessed Ganesh Chaturthi!
